The mystery of what Diego Velázquez was actually painting

Once You See This Painting You Can't Unsee It · 8:47 · Video: Art Deco · Watch at the source

In short: Las Meninas is one of the world's most famous paintings, yet its central subject remains a 350-year-old mystery. This video explores the complex layers of composition and the hidden reality behind the royal portrait.

In this masterpiece, Diego Velázquez depicts five-year-old Infanta Margarita Teresa surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting and entourage. While the artist captures an idealized vision of a bright future for the only living heir at the time, the historical reality was significantly more bleak.

The painting is famous for its complex spatial depth: it features Velázquez himself on the left, the figure of Juan José Nieto in a backlit doorway, and two hazy figures—King Philip IV and Queen Mariana—staring back from within the frame. Despite these details, what the artist was actually capturing on his canvas remains unknown.
