Nolan boasted of practical effects, yet Oppenheimer hid several hundred digital shots
Christopher Nolan's three-hour portrait of the physicist behind the atomic bomb became one of 2023's biggest hits, riding a double-bill craze with Barbie to nearly a billion dollars. It also marked a break with Warner Bros., a first for black-and-white IMAX film, and a sweep of seven Oscars.
The script draws on American Prometheus, the 2005 biography by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, and weaves together three strands: J. Robert Oppenheimer's early career teaching at Caltech and Berkeley, his leadership of the Los Alamos laboratory, and the 1954 hearing that stripped him of his security clearance. Cillian Murphy, the first actor cast, plays Oppenheimer, with Emily Blunt as his wife Kitty, Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, the Atomic Energy Commission chairman whose grudge drives the later scenes.
Nolan left Warner Bros. for the project, unhappy that the studio had released films in cinemas and on HBO Max simultaneously; it was his first film outside Warner since Memento in 2000. Announced in September 2021 and shot from February to May 2022, it was photographed by Hoyte van Hoytema on IMAX and other 65 mm stock, including scenes in black-and-white IMAX film for the first time. Nolan stressed practical effects and minimal compositing, but a largely uncredited crew of around 160 still produced several hundred visual effects shots.
The drama tracks the fallout of success. After the Trinity test of July 1945 and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Oppenheimer tells President Truman of his remorse, and later argues for arms talks rather than Edward Teller's hydrogen bomb. Old ties to the Communist Party, including his affair with Jean Tatlock, resurface when Strauss engineers the hearing, and the board revokes his clearance by two votes to one. In a final twist, Strauss's own bid to join the cabinet collapses in 1959 when the physicist David Hill exposes his vendetta.
Universal released the film on July 21, 2023, after a Paris premiere at Le Grand Rex. Sharing its opening with Barbie fuelled the Barbenheimer phenomenon, and it grossed over $983 million, making it the year's third-highest earner and, until Michael overtook it in 2026, the most successful biopic ever. It won seven of its thirteen Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Murphy and Best Supporting Actor for Downey.
