In short: Before she became a legendary director, Penny Marshall was a tap dancer and a sitcom star. She eventually pivoted behind the camera, shattering industry glass ceilings with a string of massive hits. Her journey from bit-part actress to Hollywood powerhouse remains a defining chapter in the history of American cinema.

Born in New York in 1943, Penny Marshall grew up in a family immersed in the entertainment industry. Her father was an industrial filmmaker, and her mother operated a dance school. After briefly attending the University of New Mexico, Marshall moved to Hollywood in 1967 to join her brother, Garry Marshall, a successful comedy writer. Her early career was defined by small television roles, most notably as the secretary Myrna on The Odd Couple, a part she held for four years.

Marshall’s breakthrough arrived in 1976 with the sitcom Laverne & Shirley, where she played the title character. The show’s immense popularity cemented her status as a comedic talent, but her ambitions soon shifted toward directing. She made her feature debut with Jumpin’ Jack Flash in 1986. Two years later, she directed Big, a film about a 12-year-old boy whose wish to become an adult is granted. The movie was a critical and commercial triumph, becoming the first film directed by a woman to gross over $100 million at the box office.

Following the success of Big, Marshall directed a series of acclaimed projects, including the 1990 drama Awakenings, based on the work of Oliver Sacks, and the 1992 hit A League of Their Own. Her later directorial work included Renaissance Man in 1994 and The Preacher’s Wife in 1996. By the time of her death in 2018, Marshall had secured her legacy as one of the first women to achieve consistent, long-term commercial success as a motion picture director in Hollywood.
