In short: Known as the Glue for his ability to support any cast member, Phil Hartman was a master of character work. From his iconic impressions to his voice acting on The Simpsons, he was a beloved professional who preferred the background, yet his life ended in a tragic, headline-grabbing domestic murder-suicide.

Born in 1948, Phil Hartman began his career as a graphic artist, designing album covers for bands like Poco and America. His transition into comedy started in 1975 with The Groundlings, where he helped develop the character Pee-wee Herman. By 1986, he joined Saturday Night Live, where he performed over 70 distinct characters, including his famous impression of Bill Clinton. Colleagues like Lorne Michaels noted his low-maintenance nature and his unique ability to elevate the entire ensemble, earning him the nickname Glue.

Despite his professional success, Hartman's personal life was marked by turmoil. After two previous divorces, he married Brynn Omdahl in 1987. The marriage suffered from her struggles with substance abuse and domestic violence, leading Hartman to consider retirement to save his family. Friends, including Joe Rogan, urged him to leave the relationship, but Hartman remained committed to his two children. On May 28, 1998, while Hartman was asleep, Brynn shot and killed him before taking her own life.

Hartman's legacy remains defined by his versatility and work ethic. Whether as the cowardly Bill McNeal on NewsRadio or the voice of Troy McClure on The Simpsons, he was described by peers as a master of his craft. Posthumously, he was inducted into both Canada's and Hollywood's Walks of Fame. His estate, valued at approximately $1.23 million, provided for his children, who were raised by their aunt and uncle after the tragedy.
