Robert Joffrey transformed American ballet by blending classical precision with modern, experimental movement.
In short: Born Abdullah Jaffa Bey Khan, Robert Joffrey defied the rigid hierarchies of traditional dance. By fusing the technical grace of ballet with the raw emotion of modern dance, he created an eclectic, daring repertoire that brought rock music and untried choreographers to the world's most prestigious stages.
Born in Seattle in 1930 to an Afghan father and Italian mother, Robert Joffrey began his training as a remedy for asthma. His path to innovation began in earnest after moving to New York City in 1948. Unlike his contemporaries, Joffrey was uniquely positioned as one of the first choreographers to master both classical ballet and modern dance. This dual fluency allowed him to dismantle the traditional ranking systems that defined most companies, opting instead for a unified ensemble where dancers could fluidly rotate through leading roles.
In 1956, Joffrey founded the company that would bear his name, famously launching its first tour with six dancers traveling across the country in a station wagon. The company’s rise was meteoric, moving into the New York City Center in 1966. Joffrey’s vision was defined by an insatiable appetite for the new; he commissioned works from untried choreographers and embraced experimental staging. His 1967 production, Astarte, became iconic for its use of rock music, motion-picture effects, and lighting, pushing the boundaries of what ballet could represent to a modern audience.
Beyond his own choreography, Joffrey acted as a vital bridge between disparate worlds. He introduced ballet audiences to modern masters like Twyla Tharp and Alvin Ailey and revived classic Ballets Russes works. His influence extended globally, with tours reaching the Soviet Union and India. Though he died in 1988 at age 57, his legacy persists through the company he built with his long-time partner and co-director, Gerald Arpino. By the time the company moved to Chicago in 1995, it had cemented its status as a pillar of American cultural achievement, forever altering the landscape of dance through its commitment to diversity and artistic risk.
