From a legal secretary to a Broadway Genie
In short: Before she was a Daytime Emmy winner, Sherri Shepherd faced a year of homelessness after her first television break failed. Her journey from a Chicago legal secretary to a mainstay of American television is a masterclass in navigating the extreme uncertainty of show business.
Sherri Shepherd’s career has been defined by both high-profile success and profound instability. In 1995, she landed her first television role as Victoria Carlson in the short-lived sitcom Cleghorne!. However, the show's cancellation led to a period of intense hardship; Shepherd has recounted losing her apartment and facing car repossession, resulting in a year of homelessness where she relied on the hospitality of others.
She eventually found stability through iconic roles, such as playing Sheila Yarborough on The Jamie Foxx Show from 1996 to 2001, and later starring as the lead, Ramona Platt, in the sitcom Less than Perfect between 2002 and 2006. Her television presence expanded significantly when she joined the ABC daytime talk show The View as a permanent co-host in September 2007, a position she held until 2014.
Her tenure on The View was marked by both accolades and controversy. In 2009, she won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host. Yet, she also faced public scrutiny for various on-air statements, including remarks regarding evolution and historical timelines. Despite these moments, she transitioned into hosting her own syndicated daytime talk show, Sherri, which premiered on September 12, 2022.
Looking ahead, Shepherd continues to diversify her talents. In October 2026, she is set to star in the musical Aladdin, where she will make history as the first female Genie. Her career remains a testament to the unpredictable nature of the industry, where one can be working one day and facing total uncertainty the next.
