In short: Guy Ritchie’s 2019 crime caper The Gentlemen follows an Oxford-educated American drug lord attempting to offload his UK cannabis business. The film’s intricate web of blackmail and betrayal became a commercial success, but its path from script to screen was marked by evolving titles and claims of intellectual property theft.

The Gentlemen centers on Michael Pearson, a Florida-raised drug baron who built a criminal empire by cultivating marijuana on the estates of cash-strapped British aristocrats. As Pearson attempts to sell his operation to American billionaire Matthew Berger for £400 million, his plans are derailed by a series of schemes. These include a tabloid editor’s blackmail attempt, a rival gangster’s power play, and a viral video of a lab raid by a group of amateur fighters known as The Toddlers.

The film’s production history was notably fluid. Originally announced in May 2018 as Toff Guys, the project underwent multiple title changes, including a stint as Bush, before settling on its final name. Principal photography began in November 2018 across various London locations. Upon its release in early 2020, the film grossed $126.2 million worldwide against a $22 million budget. Critics offered mixed to positive reviews, with some noting the film’s stylistic similarities to Ritchie’s earlier works like Snatch.

The project faced legal scrutiny in 2023 when actor Mickey De Hara sued Ritchie, alleging that the film plagiarized characters and plot points from a screenplay De Hara had previously submitted for a potential RocknRolla sequel. De Hara specifically pointed to the character Coach and his group of thugs as a direct lift from his own work. While Ritchie admitted to using certain elements from the screenplay, he argued in the London High Court that De Hara’s contributions did not meet the necessary thresholds for formal writing credit.

The Gentlemen’s legacy has since expanded beyond the original film. In 2024, Netflix released a spin-off television series starring Theo James, which was developed under Ritchie’s oversight. This expansion reflects the enduring interest in the film’s brash, stylized world, even as the legal disputes surrounding its origins highlight the complex nature of creative collaboration and intellectual property within the film industry.
