From mockery to milestones: the evolution of a wrestling dynasty
In short: Once booed for a forced gimmick, this trio transformed into record-breaking icons. By pivoting from a gospel persona to sarcastic heels, they earned critical acclaim and dominated the ring. They eventually secured thirteen titles, proving that a snarky backstage idea could evolve into a legendary era of wrestling history.
The New Day’s trajectory is a masterclass in pivot. Originally formed in 2014, the trio—Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods—debuted with a 'heroic black gospel' gimmick that received largely negative fan reactions. Seeking a change, they transitioned into 'heels' in April 2015, adopting a sarcastic, fanatical obsession with the 'power of positivity.' This shift was a turning point; the audience began chanting 'New Day rocks!' and the group earned critical acclaim, including being named 'WWE Wrestler of the Year' by Rolling Stone and 'Best Gimmick' by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
Their dominance is etched in the record books. With 13 total WWE-branded tag team titles (one NXT, five Raw, and seven SmackDown), this trio owns the record for the highest number of reigns. A record of seven reigns as SmackDown Tag Team Champions was also achieved by the group. For 483 days, they possessed the Raw Tag Team Championship, marking the longest male tag team title run in WWE history prior to being beaten by The Usos in 2022.
The group’s internal dynamics were built on real-life history. Woods and Kingston first met in 2006 or 2007 when Woods was applying for a job at a wrestling building. Woods eventually pitched the idea of the stable to writer Michael Notarile after struggling for screen time. They intentionally chose to include Kingston, despite doubts about his ability to turn heel, to create a team of three men who 'just want more from life.'
The team eventually fractured in late 2024. Following Big E's indefinite hiatus due to a cervical fracture in March 2022, Kingston and Woods removed him from the group in December 2024. Big E announced his retirement in 2025, and Kingston and Woods signed with AEW in August 2026 as The New Level. Their legacy remains defined by their ability to turn a 'snarky' backstage idea into a multi-year era of championship dominance.
