In short: Initially ignored by critics and audiences alike, this 1975 cult classic transformed from a commercial failure into a global phenomenon. By embracing midnight screenings and interactive shadow-casts, it defied traditional distribution to remain in cinemas for over 50 years, eventually earning preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show began as a 1973 stage musical written by Richard O'Brien, who drew inspiration from 1930s-1960s B-grade horror and science fiction. When the film adaptation premiered in 1975, it was largely dismissed by reviewers, with Newsweek calling it 'tasteless, plotless and pointless.' Its initial box office performance was modest, grossing just over $1.2 million globally in its first year. The film was briefly withdrawn from theatres after failing to gain traction in its initial U.S. release.

The film's trajectory shifted in 1976 at New York City's Waverly Theater, where it found a home as a midnight movie. Audiences began engaging with the screen, shouting lines and dressing as characters, which evolved into the 'shadow-cast' tradition where fans perform alongside the film. This participatory culture proved so resilient that even after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019 and began pulling archival titles, they made a specific exception to allow these screenings to continue.

Beyond its cultural impact, the film influenced fashion. Costume designer Sue Blane, who had never researched science fiction, created iconic looks that she later credited with helping to spark punk rock trends like torn fishnets and dyed hair. The production itself was a patchwork of repurposed props from Hammer Horror films, including the tank used for the character Rocky’s birth. Today, the film is celebrated for its genre-defying spirit, with a 4K restoration released in 2025 to mark its 50th anniversary.
