How a failed script drove the Wachowskis to become directing icons
In short: After watching their screenplay for Assassins get completely rewritten by a studio, the Wachowskis realized they couldn't survive as writers alone. This pivotal moment shifted their trajectory from screenwriters to the visionary directors behind the groundbreaking Matrix franchise and the complex epic Cloud Atlas.
The Wachowskis' journey into film direction was born from professional frustration. In the mid-1990s, they wrote the script for the 1994 film Assassins, directed by Richard Donner. However, Warner Bros. had the script "totally rewritten" by Brian Helgeland. This experience convinced the sisters that they needed to become directors to maintain creative control over their work.
This determination led to their 1996 directorial debut with the neo-noir thriller Bound, which was noted for featuring a same-sex relationship without making it the central plot point. Their subsequent success with the 1999 science fiction hit The Matrix changed cinema history. The film popularized the "bullet time" visual effect and won four Academy Awards, including Best Visual Effects. It was so culturally significant that the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2012.
The sisters' filmography is marked by ambitious, high-concept storytelling. Following The Matrix, they directed the 2005 adaptation V for Vendetta and the 2008 live-action adaptation of the anime Speed Racer. In 2012, they co-directed the massive independent production Cloud Atlas with Tom Tykwer. Despite polarized reviews, the film received a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival and remains the project they are most proud of, believing it is the film for which they will be remembered.
Lilly Wachowski has since noted that their body of work, including The Matrix, can be viewed through the lens of their transness, highlighting themes of identity, self-image, and transformation.
