How Top Gun: Maverick achieved its visceral, high-speed aerial authenticity without relying on CGI
In short: To capture the intensity of modern aerial combat, the production team behind Top Gun: Maverick rejected traditional soundstage techniques. Instead, they spent over a year working with the Navy to rig IMAX-certified cameras inside cockpits, forcing actors to direct themselves while enduring the extreme gravitational forces of real flight.
The film's commitment to realism required an unprecedented technical effort. Director Joseph Kosinski and his team utilized IMAX-certified Sony Venice 6K full-frame cameras, mounting them both inside and outside the F/A-18E/F Super Hornets. Because the actors were essentially directing themselves while in the air, they underwent a rigorous three-month boot camp designed by Tom Cruise. This training included underwater evacuation drills and aerobatics to ensure the cast could withstand high g-forces while operating complex camera equipment.
Authenticity extended to the aircraft themselves. While the production acquired 20 working jets, they also collaborated with Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works division to design the fictional 'Darkstar' hypersonic aircraft, aiming for a level of engineering realism that mirrored actual aerospace development. Conversely, the iconic F-14 Tomcat—which has been decommissioned in the United States—could not be flown. The team had to secure a static model from the San Diego Air & Space Museum, dismantling and shipping its components to make it appear functional for the film's climax.
Despite the focus on practical effects, the production was a massive undertaking in post-production. The film featured approximately 2,400 visual effects shots, with CGI used to augment the aerial sequences, such as creating multiple jets from footage of a single aircraft. Sound design was equally meticulous, with Skywalker Sound collaborating with GE Aviation to capture authentic engine audio. The result was a global success, grossing $1.5 billion and proving that even in an era of digital dominance, audiences remain captivated by the tangible strain of real-world physics.
