Troy Baker has voiced Batman, the Joker and three different Robins
Before he became Joel in The Last of Us, Troy Baker fronted a Dallas rock band and read radio adverts. He now holds the record for most acting nominations at the BAFTA Games Awards, seven between 2013 and 2026, and has played nearly every major role in Gotham.
Baker's route into voice work started with radio commercials in Dallas. Christopher Sabat recruited him to Funimation for the English version of the anime Case Closed, and he went on to dub a long run of Japanese series, Bleach and Naruto among them. A move to Los Angeles brought Marvel cartoons, where he played Hawkeye and Loki.
Games came almost by accident. His first was the shooter series Brothers in Arms, and he later described drifting from one job to the next as a snowball effect. The breakthrough year was 2013, when he voiced Booker DeWitt in BioShock Infinite and provided both voice and motion capture for Joel in The Last of Us. Both games scored above 90 percent on review aggregators, and The Last of Us won him an award at VGX that year. Entertainment Weekly picked him as the gaming industry's breakout actor of 2013, also citing his Joker in Batman: Arkham Origins. Across different games he has also voiced Batman himself and the Tim Drake, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd versions of Robin.
Music came first, though. He sang and played rhythm guitar in the alternative rock band Tripp Fontaine, whose 2004 debut produced the radio single Burning Out. A solo album followed in October 2014, and in 2017 he and his backing band renamed themselves Window to the Abbey.
His career has had a sharp stumble. On January 14, 2022, he announced a tie-up with the blockchain firm Voiceverse, signing off with the line that people could hate or create. Within hours it emerged that the company had taken voices from 15.ai, a free text-to-speech tool, pitched them up and sold them as NFTs without permission. Baker conceded his tone may have been antagonistic and quit the partnership on January 31.
