How Varun Dhawan evolved from a commercial hit machine to a versatile character actor
In short: Varun Dhawan rose to fame as a quintessential Bollywood heartthrob, delivering a string of massive commercial hits. Yet, beneath the polished persona of a bankable star, he has consistently challenged his own limits, trading easy-breezy romantic comedies for gritty, transformative roles that reveal a surprisingly deep range as an actor.
Born in 1987 to director David Dhawan, Varun Dhawan initially prepared for a career behind the camera, working as an assistant director on the 2010 film My Name Is Khan. His transition to acting in 2012 with Student of the Year was an immediate success, establishing him as a charismatic presence. Throughout the 2010s, he maintained a remarkable streak of commercial hits, including Main Tera Hero, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, and the high-grossing Dilwale. By 2018, Forbes India ranked him as one of the country's highest-paid celebrities, with an estimated annual income of ₹495.8 million.
Despite his reputation as a 'hit machine,' Dhawan has frequently sought roles that subvert his established image. His performance in the 2015 thriller Badlapur, where he played a grieving, vengeful father, was a pivotal departure that earned him a Filmfare Best Actor nomination. Similarly, his work in the 2018 drama October showcased a nuanced understanding of human pain, earning him critical acclaim for shedding his 'starry swagger.' These roles demonstrated a willingness to prioritize artistic vulnerability over the predictable, high-energy performances that defined his early career.
The 2020s brought a period of commercial fluctuation, marked by both critical successes and challenges. While films like the 2022 horror-comedy Bhediya and the family drama Jugjugg Jeeyo were well-received, others faced scrutiny. In 2026, he achieved his highest-grossing release to date with the war film Border 2, portraying Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya. This role, which required him to train alongside real soldiers, highlighted his continued commitment to physical and emotional preparation, proving that even after years of stardom, he remains focused on evolving his craft beyond the constraints of his early stardom.
