The planned paradise of Westwood Village faced a tragic 1988 turning point
In short: In the 1920s, Westwood Village was engineered as a Mediterranean masterpiece of architecture and commerce. It was designed to be a beacon of upscale living, but a single violent event in 1988 fundamentally altered the neighborhood's trajectory, shifting its reputation from a premier destination to a cautionary tale of urban change.
Developed on the 3,000-acre Wolfskill Ranch, Westwood was meticulously planned by Harold Janss starting in the 1920s. Janss envisioned a cohesive aesthetic, hiring architects to follow a Mediterranean theme featuring clay tile roofs, decorative Spanish tile, and courtyards. Westwood Village, a 55-acre district opened in 1929, was a pioneering feat: it was only the second suburban shopping district of its scale ever built worldwide, following the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. By 1939, despite the Great Depression, the area boasted 452 businesses, including major department stores like Bullock's.
The neighborhood's status as a premier destination began to erode in the late 1980s. In January 1988, a gang shootout resulted in the death of 27-year-old Karen Toshima, a graphics artist. The incident sparked national headlines and a massive police response, but it left a lasting scar on the community's image. While the area remained affluent, the murder became a symbol of the crime wave ravaging Los Angeles, leading to a perception that even exclusive neighborhoods were not immune.
The subsequent decades saw a steady decline in the Village's dominance. The closure of anchor stores like Macy's in 1999, the rise of online retail like Amazon.com, and the growth of nearby shopping centers like The Grove lured customers away. A 2014 report noted that despite revitalization efforts, the Village struggled with deteriorating public spaces and high vacancies. Even decades later, the 1988 tragedy is still cited as a primary factor in the neighborhood's diminished activity and reputation.
