In short: In 1991, two men posed as police officers and walked into a Boston museum. In just 81 minutes, they vanished 13 masterpieces without firing a single shot. Today, those gilded frames still hang in their original spots—a haunting public reminder of a crime that remains unsolved.

On the night of March 18, 1990 (noted as March 19, 1991, in some accounts), two men gained entry to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum by posing as officers responding to a disturbance. After overpowering and tying up security guards in the basement, they spent 81 minutes selecting 13 specific works of art. The haul included sketches by Degas, Rembrandt paintings, and one of only 36 Vermeer paintings in existence. The loot was worth more than $500 million during that period, establishing it as America's biggest theft of property. history.

This robbery stands out due to how accurately the criminals operated and their particular selections. Despite the high value of the collection, the works have never surfaced on the black market. This lack of movement has baffled both art historians and the FBI for decades, leading to ongoing investigations by the Boston Field Office in partnership with the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney’s Office.

In 1994, four years after the theft, the museum made a deliberate editorial choice: they began displaying the large, ornate, gilded frames where the masterpieces once hung. This serves as an intentional message to the public about what was lost and maintains the hope of their eventual return. A bounty reaching $10 million remains available from the gallery for any pieces brought back intact.

The heist also represents a violation of Isabella Stewart Gardner's original vision. Having opened the museum in 1903, she curated every piece to be placed exactly where she wanted it, designing the institution itself as a work of art. By removing the paintings from their specific locations, the thieves disrupted a carefully constructed historical narrative that remains incomplete.
