In short: Willi Ninja did not invent voguing, but he refined it into a precise, sharp art form that transcended Harlem drag balls. As the founder of the House of Ninja, he blended influences from haute couture to martial arts, eventually bringing this underground movement to international stages, music videos, and high-fashion runways.

Born William Roscoe Leake in 1961, Ninja was a self-taught dancer who emerged from the vibrant, competitive world of Harlem’s drag balls. While he did not create the dance style, he elevated it by incorporating diverse inspirations, including Olympic gymnastics, Kemetic hieroglyphics, and the movements of Fred Astaire. By his twenties, he was perfecting a signature style characterized by clean, angular lines that brought the form to a new level of technical sophistication.

In 1982, Ninja broke with tradition by establishing the House of Ninja. Unlike other houses, which were predominantly African-American, his group was known for its multiracial composition. He served as the house 'Mother,' acting as both a mentor and a leader. He dedicated countless hours to training his 'children' in public spaces like the Christopher Street pier and various underground clubs, fostering a sense of community that functioned as an extended family.

Ninja’s influence expanded significantly following his appearance in the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning. He leveraged this exposure to secure roles in music videos for artists like Janet Jackson and Malcolm McLaren, and he even ventured into runway modeling for Jean-Paul Gaultier. His career was marked by a constant drive to innovate, eventually leading him to open his own modeling agency, Elements of Ninja, in 2004. He remained a prominent figure in performance until his death from AIDS-related heart failure in 2006.

Today, Ninja is recognized as a pivotal figure in LGBTQ, gender, and performance studies. His work challenged conventional gender expression, and his legacy continues to resonate within contemporary art and music circles. Beyond his technical contributions to dance, his life remains a testament to the power of artistic reinvention and the enduring impact of subcultural movements on the mainstream.
