How China's most famous actress became a ghost in her own country overnight.
In short: Zhao Wei rose from a humble student to China's first national idol, dominating screens and business alike. Then, in 2021, she was abruptly erased from the Chinese internet. Her sudden disappearance and the subsequent censorship of her life's work remain a mystery, marking a dramatic fall from cultural grace.
Born in Wuhu in 1976, Zhao Wei achieved meteoric fame in the late 1990s through the television series My Fair Princess. Her portrayal of the rebellious Xiao Yanzi made her a household name and a cultural icon, though it also drew criticism from some who viewed the character as a poor influence on children. By the mid-2000s, Zhao had successfully transitioned into film, winning prestigious awards for roles in Dearest and A Time to Love, while also establishing herself as a formidable businesswoman and director.
Her business ventures were equally ambitious. In 2014, Zhao and her then-husband invested nearly HKD 3.1 billion in Alibaba Pictures, becoming the company's second-largest shareholder. However, her corporate career faced scrutiny when the China Securities Regulatory Commission penalized her and her company for misleading the market regarding acquisition plans. She was barred from China's securities markets for five years and fined 300,000 yuan. Beyond entertainment and finance, Zhao became an international vintner, purchasing multiple French vineyards, including the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru estate Château Monlot in 2011.
The turning point arrived on 27 August 2021, when the Chinese government blacklisted Zhao without explanation. Her films and dramas were scrubbed from major streaming platforms, and her digital footprint was systematically dismantled. While some restrictions were partially lifted in 2024, allowing for the restoration of select works, her presence remains heavily curtailed. Zhao has since maintained a low profile, occasionally surfacing through social media or limited public appearances, leaving the true reasons for her sudden erasure a subject of intense speculation.
