The musician who traded classical rigor for 'Victoriandustrial' fantasy
In short: Born in Los Angeles, Emilie Autumn's career was shaped by a refusal to conform. After leaving Indiana University over disagreements regarding the intersection of classical music and performer appearance, she forged a unique path through independent labels and theatrical 'Fairy Pop' performances.
Emilie Autumn's musical identity is a complex fusion of genres, which she has described as 'Fairy Pop,' 'Fantasy Rock,' or 'Victoriandustrial.' Her aesthetic is heavily influenced by the Victorian era, as well as plays, novels, and history. This theatricality extends to her live performances, where she has utilized all-female backup dancers known as The Bloody Crumpets to incorporate elements of cabaret, electronica, and burlesque alongside classical and glam rock influences.
Her journey toward this distinct style began with intensive classical training. After starting violin at age four, she left regular schooling at age nine or ten to pursue becoming a world-class violinist, practicing eight to nine hours daily. This rigorous path eventually led her to Indiana University in Bloomington. However, she departed the institution after two years due to fundamental disagreements regarding the relationship between classical music and the visual appearance of the performer; she maintained that a performer's clothing should not insult the original composer or the audience.
Autumn's career is marked by a commitment to independence. After experiencing dissatisfaction with how major producers handled her music, she founded her own independent label, Traitor Records. Using this label, she launched her 1997 first classical record, On a Day: Music for Violin & Continuo, captured during one single day. She has since navigated various labels, including the German label Trisol Music Group and the New York-based The End Records, while expanding her creative reach into poetry, film, and even couture fashion through her WillowTech House.
