The real-life military hazing that inspired the legal drama A Few Good Men
In short: Aaron Sorkin’s 1992 courtroom classic was sparked by a phone call with his sister, a Navy JAG lawyer. She described a real case involving Marines who nearly killed a comrade during a hazing ritual. While the film became a blockbuster, the actual incident left a complex legal legacy.
The film A Few Good Men follows the court-martial of two Marines accused of murdering a fellow soldier during a 'code red'—an extrajudicial punishment. Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin drew inspiration from his sister, Deborah, who served in the U.S. Navy JAG Corps. She told him about a 1986 incident at Guantanamo Bay where Marines, known as 'the Ten,' bound and gagged a fellow soldier named William Alvarado for breaking the chain of command.
In the real-life case, Alvarado was assaulted and gagged with a cloth that may have been soaked in gasoline, causing him to lose consciousness and choke. Unlike the fictional Private Santiago, Alvarado survived. Three of the Marines involved stood trial, arguing they were following an implied order from a superior. They were found guilty of lesser offenses but retained their status as Marines, eventually receiving honorable discharges.
The film’s production was marked by high-stakes casting and intense collaboration. Jack Nicholson, paid $500,000 per day for his role as Colonel Jessep, delivered the iconic line, 'You can't handle the truth!' which later ranked as the 29th greatest movie quote by the American Film Institute. Despite the film's massive success—grossing over $243 million—it faced a $10 million lawsuit from five of the real-life Marines involved in the 1986 incident, who claimed the story was stolen. The suit was unsuccessful.
While the film is often praised for its performances, critics like Roger Ebert noted that the screenplay occasionally spelled out its plot points too clearly, robbing the audience of the chance to solve the mystery themselves. Nevertheless, the film remains a cultural touchstone, with its title derived from the famous Marine Corps recruitment slogan.
