Alchemy of Souls, a South Korean television series written by the Hong sisters, explores the lives of young mages in the fictional country of Daeho. The narrative centers on the consequences of a forbidden magic spell that enables souls to switch bodies. This premise forces an elite warrior named Naksu into the body of a woman named Mu-deok, leading to an unlikely partnership with a nobleman named Jang Uk. As Mu-deok becomes his servant and master, the two develop a deep bond that defies their social standing.
The series is divided into two distinct parts, spanning a total of 30 episodes aired between June 2022 and January 2023. Part 1 establishes the initial conflict, while Part 2, titled Light and Shadow, shifts the focus three years after a tragic event orchestrated by Jin Mu. Jang Uk, having returned from the dead due to the power of the Ice Stone, transforms into a ruthless hunter of soul shifters. He eventually encounters Jin Bu-yeon, a mysterious heiress whose speech patterns mirror those of his lost love, Naksu.
Production of the series was a massive undertaking, involving a ₩5 billion investment to construct a dedicated filming site in Maseong-myeon. The project faced various hurdles, including a temporary filming suspension in October 2021 due to a COVID-19 case among the crew. Additionally, the production saw a notable cast transition; while Jung So-min portrayed the lead character in Part 1, Go Youn-jung took over the role for the second part. Despite these changes, the show maintained significant popularity, ranking second in Netflix Korea’s television category throughout 2022.
