The actor who turned down Clint Eastwood for a houseboat
In short: Alun Armstrong is a master of the grotesque and the psychotic, but his most enduring legacy is rooted in a refusal. To play a specific Dickensian character, he turned down a role with a Hollywood legend, choosing instead to inhabit a world of literary grit and musical theater.
Born Alan Armstrong in County Durham to coal miners and Methodist lay preachers, his path to stardom was unconventional. After feeling out of place at the National Youth Theatre due to his northern accent and studying fine art at Newcastle University, he worked as a bricklayer and a gravedigger. It was only after these manual jobs that he returned to acting, eventually finding a home in the Royal Shakespeare Company where he spent nine years. Armstrong became a staple of British television and stage, known for his versatility in portraying 'colourful' and often 'crazy' characters. He is a noted devotee of Charles Dickens, a passion sparked in his school days. This devotion led to a pivotal career decision: he turned down an offer from Clint Eastwood to play Daniel Peggotty in a Dickens adaptation because he was so captivated by the character's houseboat on the beach.
During the mid-1980s, he achieved a theatrical peak by first portraying Monsieur Thénardier within the West End's Les Misérables. Despite his initial surprise at the musical's operatic success, his performance as the 'gruesome and comic' innkeeper became a career highlight. He later cemented his status as a premier musical theater actor by winning an Olivier Award in 1994 for his title role in the 1993 London revival of Sweeney Todd at the National Theatre.
Note: While his name appears in records for an English footballer and manager, the character actor Alun Armstrong is the subject of these specific artistic achievements.
