The woman who defined a generation's favorite orphan on Broadway
In short: In 1977, a Philadelphia native stepped into a role that would define her career and a musical era. Andrea McArdle didn't just play Annie; she became the definitive face of the character, launching a career that spanned from the West End to the high seas.
Andrea McArdle first originated the role of Annie in the 1977 Broadway musical production. Her performance was so impactful it earned her a Tony Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical. She carried this momentum across the Atlantic in April 1978, opening the London West End production of the same show.
Her career was marked by high-profile variety appearances and national anthems. Between 1977 and 1979, she appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, often performing alongside Liberace. The 1979 Major League Baseball All Star Game in Seattle featured her performance, during which she voiced the national anthems of Canada and the United States.
McArdle's versatility took her from the spotlight of Broadway to the intimate settings of cabaret and casino showrooms in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Notably, she eventually took on the role of Miss Hannigan in the musical Annie—a dramatic shift from her original character. She also portrayed Judy Garland in the NBC telepic Rainbow and starred in major productions like Les Misérables and Anything Goes.
In her later career, McArdle continued to perform in Off-Broadway plays and cruise ship theater series. While she was set to play Eleanor Roosevelt in NBC's Annie Live! in 2021, she had to withdraw due to a family emergency, though she still appears on the production's cast recording. Her daughter, Alexis Kalehoff, also followed in her footsteps as a performer in productions like Les Miz.
