How a massive box office failure spawned an unexpected, sprawling animated franchise
In short: The 2019 animated comedy Arctic Dogs is remembered as a commercial disaster, grossing less than a fifth of its production budget. Despite scathing critical reviews and a record-breaking low opening, the film defied its disastrous debut to launch a surprisingly expansive franchise of spin-offs, web series, and additional films.
Arctic Dogs, co-directed by Aaron Woodley and Dimos Vrysellas, follows Swifty, an arctic fox mailroom worker who dreams of becoming a elite husky courier. His journey leads him to uncover a plot by Otto Von Walrus, a villainous genius voiced by John Cleese, who intends to melt the polar ice caps using ancient gas to seize global power. The film features an ensemble cast including Jeremy Renner, Heidi Klum, and Alec Baldwin, yet it struggled to find an audience or critical favor upon its November 1, 2019 release.
The film's performance was historically poor. Debuting in 2,835 theaters, it earned only $2.9 million in its opening weekend, marking the lowest opening ever for a film in that many theaters. With a production budget of $50 million, the project was a major commercial failure. Critics were equally harsh, citing a lack of originality and tired humor. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes recorded a 13% approval rating, while Metacritic assigned it a score of 28 out of 100, reflecting generally unfavorable sentiment.
Remarkably, the brand persisted. Following the film, a web series titled Arctic Friends debuted in 2020, eventually spanning 160 shorts. The franchise further expanded with the Puffins series, featuring Johnny Depp, and its own spin-off, Puffins Impossible, released in 2022. Additionally, the studio produced two holiday-themed spin-off films, Christmas Thieves and The Good Witch of Christmas. While the original feature was panned for its unremarkable plot, the intellectual property proved resilient enough to sustain a multi-year ecosystem of content across various streaming platforms.
