The only time two submarines sank each other while submerged
In short: In the silent world of undersea warfare, most engagements are won by the side that remains undetected. Yet, in 1945, a rare exception occurred: a submarine successfully hunted and sank another while both were fully submerged. This feat required a mix of technological luck, acoustic analysis, and a daring tactical gamble.
On February 9, 1945, the British submarine HMS Venturer achieved a historic milestone by sinking the German U-boat U-864. To date, no other instance exists where one underwater craft deliberately destroyed a submerged submarine. The success relied on the U-864's own noise; the German boat was snorkeling, which produced significant acoustic signatures for the Venturer's hydrophones—an early form of passive sonar.
The commander of the Venturer, James S. By watching the snorkel mast for more than 45 minutes, 'Jimmy' Launders successfully mapped the U-boat's zig-zagging path. When it came time to strike, Launders made a critical tactical assumption: he believed the U-boat would execute an "emergency deep" maneuver upon hearing the torpedoes in the water. Based on this, he aimed a spread of four torpedoes to intercept the vessel's predicted path. One hit was sufficient to sink the U-boat.
This event highlights the evolution of the "hunter-killer" submarine. Following World War II, the U.S. Navy and Soviet Union raced to develop designs like the German Type XXI, which featured streamlined hulls and high battery capacity for superior submerged speed. This technological leap eventually led to the nuclear-powered SSN, which could maintain high speeds at great depths indefinitely. While modern nuclear submarines have largely superseded conventional diesel-electric boats in high-intensity roles, the principles of acoustic stealth and tactical positioning established during these early underwater duels remain the foundation of naval warfare.
