Why the long-awaited sequel to Bad Santa failed to capture the original's holiday magic
In short: Thirteen years after the cult classic Bad Santa arrived, its sequel attempted to reignite the misanthropic charm of Willie Soke. Despite bringing back key cast members and introducing a new antagonist, the film struggled to resonate with critics or audiences, ultimately becoming a notable box office disappointment in 2016.
Released in November 2016, Bad Santa 2 arrived with high expectations following the 2003 original. Directed by Mark Waters, the production featured the return of Billy Bob Thornton as the depressed, substance-addicted Willie Soke, alongside Tony Cox and Brett Kelly. The plot follows Willie to Chicago, where he reunites with his estranged mother, Sunny, played by Kathy Bates, to rob a charity. The character of Sunny was a late creative pivot; writer Shauna Cross argued that replacing the originally scripted father figure with a mother would be funnier and provide a more compelling origin for Willie’s cynical worldview.
Despite the star-studded cast and a $26 million budget, the film faced significant headwinds. It grossed only $23.2 million worldwide, falling well short of its production costs and failing to match the commercial success of its predecessor. Critics were largely unimpressed, with the film holding a 23% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews frequently noted that while the sequel retained the scatological and abrasive humor of the first installment, it lacked the genuine wit and heart that made the original a holiday staple. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it a modest C+ grade.
The development process was notoriously protracted, spanning nearly a decade of shifting scripts and studio involvement. Initial discussions began as early as 2009, with various writers and directors—including Doug Ellin and Steve Pink—attached to the project at different stages before production finally commenced in Montreal in January 2016. Even Thornton admitted during development that the sequel would likely never surpass the original, aiming instead to get as close as possible. Ultimately, the film serves as a case study in the difficulty of recapturing lightning in a bottle, with many critics suggesting that the sequel proved unnecessary, leaving fans to appreciate the 2003 film even more.
