Two unlikely outlaws take on a ruthless land baron in this 1880s Western romp
In short: In the dusty landscape of 1880s Mexico, an uneducated farm girl and a wealthy, European-educated socialite find themselves united by tragedy. After a land baron destroys their families' livelihoods, they transform into a legendary bank-robbing duo, proving that even the most mismatched partners can master the art of the heist.
Released in 2006, Bandidas marked the feature directorial debut for Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. The film serves as a unique international collaboration between France, the United States, and Mexico, with production spanning locations across the Mexican states of Durango and San Luis Potosí, as well as the Sierra de Órganos National Park. It remains notable as the first project to feature Salma Hayek and Penélope Cruz sharing the screen.
The narrative follows María Álvarez and Sara Sandoval, two women from vastly different social strata who are forced together by the cruelty of Tyler Jackson, a U.S. land baron. While their initial interactions are defined by friction and class-based tension, they eventually seek the mentorship of an established outlaw named Bill Buck. Through his guidance, they hone distinct skills: María develops into a marksman, while Sara masters the precision of throwing knives. Their partnership is cemented during a perilous training exercise, where they learn to rely on one another for survival.
As their notoriety grows, the pair finds themselves pursued by a criminal investigator, Quentin Cooke. Rather than being captured, the women recruit him to their cause after he uncovers evidence of Jackson’s criminal activities. The conflict culminates in a high-stakes confrontation over gold reserves destined for the United States. Despite their success, the protagonists maintain a moral boundary, refusing to execute their enemy until forced to defend themselves. The film concludes with the duo setting their sights on Europe, signaling an expansion of their criminal ambitions beyond the Mexican border.
While the film received a mixed critical reception, it achieved a global box office return of over 18 million dollars. Financial performance varied by region, with significant contributions from audiences in Mexico and Russia. Despite the varied reviews, the film remains a distinct entry in the Western genre, blending action and comedy while exploring themes of female agency and unlikely cooperation in the face of systemic corruption.
