In short: In the 2005 German romantic comedy Barefoot, a directionless bachelor saves a suicidal psychiatric patient from ending her life. What begins as a chance encounter at a clinic spirals into an unconventional road trip, forcing both characters to confront their deepest personal traumas and the reality of their growing affection.

Directed by and starring Til Schweiger, Barefoot—or Barfuss in its original German—explores the unlikely bond between Nick Keller and Leila. Nick is a man struggling with instability, drifting between temporary jobs while navigating a strained relationship with his wealthy stepfather, Heinrich, and his brother, Viktor. His life takes a sharp turn when he works as a cleaner at a psychiatric clinic and intervenes to save Leila, a patient who has spent her life isolated from the world.

Leila’s background is defined by nineteen years of confinement under her mother’s control. Following her mother’s death, she is hospitalized, yet she remains emotionally stunted, taking language literally and fearing physical contact with strangers. After Nick saves her, she follows him home, leading to a road trip where the two attend a wedding. This journey deepens their bond, though Nick’s internal conflict eventually leads him to attempt to return her to the clinic, only to realize he has fallen in love.

The narrative reaches a climax when Nick is arrested for kidnapping and Leila is institutionalized. In a desperate act of devotion, Nick feigns mental illness to gain entry to the facility. It is only after Leila attempts suicide again that the doctor allows him to stay. The film concludes months later, showing the pair living a quiet life together after their release. Based on a screenplay by Stephen Zotnowski, the film was a critical success, earning the German Media Award Bambi for best German film of 2005. Its resonance led to an American remake in 2014, cementing its status as a notable entry in the romantic comedy genre.
