In short: Before it was known as Begin Again, John Carney’s musical drama was titled Can a Song Save Your Life? Filmed on a modest US$8 million budget across New York City, the production became an unexpected international hit, particularly in South Korea, despite a notoriously tense relationship between its director and lead actress.

Writer-director John Carney conceived the premise for Begin Again years before drafting the screenplay in 2010. Drawing from his own background as a musician and his observations of 1990s record label executives, Carney crafted a story about a struggling producer, played by Mark Ruffalo, who discovers a talented singer-songwriter, portrayed by Keira Knightley. The film’s aesthetic, which features music as a natural narrative element, was inspired by the 1954 classic A Star Is Born.

Production began in July 2012, with filming taking place over 23 days in various Manhattan neighborhoods. To maintain authenticity and manage costs, the crew utilized handheld cameras for late-night shoots in locations like Times Square. While the actors sang to pre-recorded tracks, the film’s soundtrack—featuring songs composed primarily by Gregg Alexander—became a central component of the project. Adam Levine, in his first film role, played the singer Dave Kohl and famously declined payment for his performance.

The film’s journey to the screen was marked by a competitive bidding war, with the Weinstein Company eventually securing U.S. distribution rights for a $7 million minimum guarantee. Although it received generally positive reviews, the film’s legacy was complicated by 2016 interviews in which Carney publicly criticized Knightley’s performance. He later issued a formal apology, describing himself as an idiot and praising Knightley’s professionalism. Knightley later revealed that the two had indeed struggled to get along during the shoot.

Begin Again ultimately grossed $84.9 million worldwide, with South Korea accounting for over $41 million of that total. The film’s impact continues to evolve, with a stage adaptation scheduled to premiere at the Old Globe Theatre in 2026. Despite mixed critical comparisons to Carney’s earlier work, Once, the film remains a notable exploration of the music industry, authenticity, and the personal cost of commercial success.
