Before Treasure Island, the Golden Age of Piracy was a war against the world.
In short: Set two decades before Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel, Black Sails reimagines the brutal reality of the 18th-century West Indies. This historical drama follows Captain Flint and his crew as they fight to establish a pirate republic, blending real-life historical figures with the high-stakes hunt for legendary Spanish gold.
Launched in 2014 by Starz, Black Sails serves as a prequel to the events of Treasure Island. The narrative centers on the struggle for control over New Providence Island, where pirates declared themselves enemies of all mankind, adopting a doctrine of total war against the established maritime powers of the early 1700s. The series weaves together the lives of notorious historical figures, including Anne Bonny, Benjamin Hornigold, and Blackbeard, while exploring the transformation of Captain Flint from a refined Royal Navy officer into a feared pirate leader.
The production, filmed at Cape Town Film Studios, prioritized historical immersion. To achieve the necessary level of detail, construction crews required over 300 workers to build a single ship. The show's atmosphere is further defined by a score from Bear McCreary, which features the period-accurate hurdy-gurdy. While the first season faced criticism for its reliance on exposition and uneven character development, the series evolved significantly, with later seasons earning critical acclaim for their complex storytelling and exploration of greed.
The plot is driven by the pursuit of the Urca de Lima, a Spanish treasure galleon. The shifting control of this wealth serves as a catalyst for the broader conflict between the pirate factions and the colonial authority represented by Woodes Rogers. By the time the series concluded in 2017, it had moved beyond its initial reputation as a simple adventure, gaining praise for its nuanced portrayal of roguish characters meeting their inevitable destinies.
