A mother fights to protect her son from hijackers and her own vampiric nature.
In short: In the 2021 thriller Blood Red Sky, a German widow traveling to New York for medical treatment finds her flight hijacked by a ruthless group. To save her son, she must unleash a terrifying secret: she is a vampire, struggling to contain a monstrous hunger while battling airborne terrorists.
Directed by Peter Thorwarth and released by Netflix on 23 July 2021, Blood Red Sky—originally titled Transatlantic 473—blends high-concept horror with the tension of a hijacking thriller. The narrative follows Nadja, a mother suffering from leukemia, who boards a plane with her son, Elias. When hijackers seize the aircraft, Nadja is shot, forcing her to reveal her vampiric identity. Her condition originated years earlier after she was bitten by a vampire while searching for her husband, Nikolai, who had vanished while seeking help for their broken-down car.
The film explores the internal conflict of a protagonist who must embrace a lethal curse to protect her child. As the hijackers, led by Berg and the sociopathic Eightball, threaten the passengers, Nadja navigates the claustrophobic confines of the plane. The situation escalates when Eightball injects himself with Nadja's blood, transforming into a vampire himself and turning other passengers into monsters. The film’s pacing and psychological drama were highlighted by critics, with IndieWire naming it one of the 25 scariest movies on Netflix in 2025.
Commercially, the film became the most successful German original title for Netflix, reaching 50 million subscribers within its first four weeks. Despite a mixed reception on Metacritic, it holds an 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The production itself faced real-world challenges, including a temporary filming shutdown in Prague on 11 September 2020 due to a positive COVID-19 test. Following its success, Netflix initiated development on a sequel, though director Peter Thorwarth opted to pursue new projects rather than return to the franchise.
