A delayed masterpiece: the final film of Tony Richardson and Jessica Lange's Oscar win
In short: Completed in 1990 but shelved for four years due to a studio bankruptcy, Blue Sky finally reached audiences in 1994. It stands as the final work of director Tony Richardson, featuring a career-defining, Academy Award-winning performance by Jessica Lange that remains a benchmark for portraying volatile, complex characters.
Set in the 1960s, the film follows Major Hank Marshall, a nuclear engineer who advocates for underground testing over dangerous open-air detonations. His career and family life are complicated by his wife Carly, whose erratic, high-energy behavior creates constant friction within the military community. The narrative centers on Hank's discovery of a military cover-up involving radiation exposure, which leads to his forced institutionalization and a desperate attempt by his wife to expose the truth.
The screenplay was deeply personal, written by Rama Laurie Stagner based on an unpublished manuscript by her father, who had resigned from the military in 1964. Stagner also incorporated her own childhood memories as the eldest of two daughters. This authenticity provided a foundation for Jessica Lange’s portrayal of Carly Marshall, a role that critics compared to the screen presence of Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot. The performance was widely lauded, earning Lange both an Oscar and a Golden Globe, making her the fifth actress to win Academy Awards for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
Despite its critical success and an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s path to release was fraught with misfortune. Director Tony Richardson completed filming in August 1990 but passed away in November 1991, never seeing the final release. The project was caught in the bankruptcy of its distributor, Orion Pictures, which delayed its debut until September 1994. While it proved to be a box office disappointment, the film remains a significant cultural artifact, capturing a specific era of Cold War tension and the personal toll of military life.
