When a Revolutionary Leader Visited Hong Kong, Ordinary Citizens Became His Unlikely Shield
In short: In 1905, Sun Wen planned a clandestine trip to British-ruled Hong Kong to organize the overthrow of the Qing Empire. When government assassins arrived to eliminate him, a disparate group of rickshaw pullers, vendors, and businessmen united to protect the future of China, sacrificing everything to ensure his survival.
The 2009 historical action film Bodyguards and Assassins, directed by Teddy Chan, dramatizes the high-stakes tension surrounding Sun Wen’s secret mission. Sun’s goal was to meet with fellow revolutionaries to plan the establishment of a republic, effectively ending the corrupt Qing dynasty. The Qing government, desperate to maintain control, dispatched a lethal team of assassins to infiltrate Hong Kong and intercept him upon his arrival.
The narrative centers on Li Yutang, a wealthy businessman who transitions from a quiet financial backer of the revolutionary cause to an active organizer of the resistance. After the British authorities close his newspaper agency and remain neutral in the face of political violence, Li takes matters into his own hands. He recruits a motley crew of local residents, including a former Shaolin monk turned tofu vendor, a loyal rickshaw puller, and a disgraced former general hiding in plain sight as an opera performer.
The stakes are elevated by the personal sacrifices of these protectors. Li’s 17-year-old son, Chongguang, volunteers to act as a decoy, drawing the assassins away from the real Sun Wen. Meanwhile, other figures like the gambler Shen Chongyang and the former aristocrat turned beggar Liu Yubai join the fray, each driven by their own complex motivations. The film highlights the brutal reality of the era, noting that the political assassination of figures like Yang Quyun, the president of the Furen Literary Society, had already set a grim precedent for the violence that would follow in Hong Kong.
Ultimately, the film explores the intersection of individual agency and historical change. While the assassins, led by the fiercely loyal Yan Xiaoguo, represent the iron grip of the crumbling empire, the bodyguards represent the diverse fabric of a society ready for transformation. By placing the fate of a nation in the hands of the marginalized and the overlooked, the story illustrates how ordinary people can become the primary architects of monumental political shifts.
