How a student who struggled with dyslexia built a $15 billion film empire
In short: Brian Grazer didn't just navigate the Hollywood studio system; he navigated a learning disability that forced him to find unconventional ways to succeed. From reading other students' papers to win grades to founding one of the industry's most prolific production houses, his journey is a masterclass in persistence.
Born in Los Angeles in 1951, Grazer faced significant academic hurdles due to dyslexia. To get through school, he reportedly read other students' papers and argued with his teachers to secure his grades. His upbringing was defined by a unique household situation: following his parents' split, he was mentored by his Jewish grandmother, who taught him that success requires personal effort. Nobody will provide it for you, Brian.
Grazer eventually won a scholarship to USC, where he studied psychology before graduating from the School of Cinema-Television in 1974. He briefly attended USC Law School but quit in 1975 to pursue a career in Hollywood. He began as a television producer at Paramount Pictures in the early 1980s, where he met his long-time collaborator Ron Howard. Together, they founded Imagine Entertainment in November 1985, a company that has since produced films grossing over $15 billion.
His career is defined by a massive breadth of success across genres. Grazer has received four personal Academy Award nominations and won Best Picture for A Beautiful Mind in 2001. His portfolio includes heavyweights like Apollo 13, 8 Mile, and Frost/Nixon, as well as television hits like 24 and Arrested Development. Besides his filmmaking, he is a prominent global figure, recognised by Time as one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World" during 2007 and honored with the Atlantic Council Global Citizen Award in 2019.
