In short: Byron Howard’s journey to the pinnacle of animation was built on a childhood dream. After writing to one of Disney's legendary 'Nine Old Men', he transitioned from a studio tour guide to a powerhouse director, crafting some of the most successful animated features in the modern era.

Born in Misawa, Japan, in 1968, Byron Howard’s path to animation was anything but linear. While growing up in the United States, he harbored a deep ambition to join the Walt Disney Animation Studios. He even reached out to Master Animator Frank Thomas, a member of the prestigious 'Nine Old Men', to express his interest. This persistence eventually led him to a Disney Studio Internship, and by 1994, he was officially hired as an animator.

His early career saw him contributing to iconic films such as Pocahontas, Mulan, Lilo & Stitch, and Brother Bear. His talent for character animation was recognized early on when he received a 2003 Annie Award nomination for his work on Brother Bear. In 2009, he reached a significant professional milestone by becoming a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

As a director, Howard has become a central figure in Disney's modern successes. He co-directed Bolt in 2008, which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. He followed this with Tangled in 2010 and the massive hit Zootopia in 2016. His recent work includes the 2021 film Encanto, a project featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda that centers on a magical Colombian family. Howard has achieved significant critical acclaim, winning Academy Awards for both Zootopia and Encanto, and has received multiple Golden Globe nominations and wins for these same projects.

Looking toward the future, Howard is set to return to the world of Zootopia. He was officially announced as the co-director for Zootopia 2 on September 20, 2024, working alongside Jared Bush.
