In short: Steven Spielberg’s 2002 hit film depicts the life of Frank Abagnale Jr., a charming con artist who allegedly performed millions of dollars in scams before age 19. While the movie was a massive commercial success, the real-life exploits it portrays have been subject to significant skepticism and debunking by journalists.

The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Frank Abagnale Jr. and Tom Hanks as FBI agent Carl Hanratty, was marketed as being inspired by a true story. Spielberg sought to capture the essence of Abagnale’s claims, which included impersonating a pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer. However, Abagnale himself admitted the film took creative liberties, such as inventing a remarried mother and a persistent connection between Frank and his father. The FBI agent character, Carl, was actually based on Joseph Shea, who requested his name not be used.

Beyond the cinematic changes, the veracity of Abagnale's core narrative has faced intense scrutiny. Records indicate that during the years he claimed to be pulling off high-stakes international cons, he was actually incarcerated in the Great Meadow Correctional Facility or serving in the Navy. Federal court records from his 1970 arrest in Georgia show he cashed only 10 fraudulent checks totaling less than $1,500, a far cry from the millions he claimed. Furthermore, journalists have failed to find evidence for his claims of passing the Louisiana bar exam or working for the FBI.

Despite these discrepancies, the film remains a critical and financial triumph, grossing $352.1 million worldwide against a $52 million budget. Spielberg, who identified with the film's themes of broken homes and troubled childhoods, aimed to create a lighthearted, sympathetic portrait of a 1960s genius. While the film’s accuracy is contested, its legacy as a stylish, entertaining piece of cinema remains secure, even as the real-life history of its subject continues to be re-examined.
