A tropical island getaway turns into a mandatory marriage therapy workshop in this 2009 comedy.
In short: Four couples travel to a luxury resort in Bora Bora, expecting a relaxing vacation. Instead, they discover their stay is governed by strict, mandatory therapy sessions. As they navigate unconventional methods and hidden relationship tensions, they must confront the reality of their marriages while trapped in a tropical paradise.
Released by Universal Pictures on October 9, 2009, Couples Retreat was directed by Peter Billingsley and written by Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, and Dana Fox. The film follows four couples who head to the Eden resort in French Polynesia. While the trip is marketed as a sun-drenched beach vacation, the group quickly learns that participation in daily therapy sessions is a requirement for their stay. If they refuse, they are effectively forced to leave the island.
The narrative centers on the distinct struggles of each pair. Dave and Ronnie, played by Vaughn and Malin Åkerman, grapple with the pressures of suburban life and parenting. Jason and Cynthia, portrayed by Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, arrive at the resort hoping to save their marriage after struggling with infertility. Joey and Lucy, played by Favreau and Kristin Davis, are high school sweethearts nearing a breaking point, while Shane and his younger girlfriend, Trudy, face the challenges of a mismatched relationship. The resort owner, Marcel, played by Jean Reno, assigns each couple a unique animal spirit token at the end of their journey to symbolize their growth and reconciliation.
Despite a high-profile cast, the film faced significant critical backlash. It holds a 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 23 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics like Claudia Puig called it tedious and unromantic, though Roger Ebert noted that Vaughn’s dialogue provided some bright spots. Beyond the screen, the film was mired in controversy, including a 2020 lawsuit from actor Faizon Love regarding the removal of Black actors from international promotional posters. Despite the negative reception, the film was a commercial success, grossing $171 million worldwide during its theatrical run.
