In short: Released in 2018, Den of Thieves follows a gritty Los Angeles detective hunting a crew of ex-MARSOC Marines planning to rob the Federal Reserve. While the film received mixed reviews, it became a box office success, grossing over $80 million worldwide and spawning a 2025 sequel.

The journey of Den of Thieves to theaters was remarkably long, spanning roughly 14 years of development. Director Christian Gudegast and his writing partner initially secured a blind deal with New Line Cinema in 2003. Over the following decade, the project underwent several shifts, including considerations for a television adaptation and various distribution changes before production finally commenced in January 2017.

The film’s narrative centers on the cat-and-mouse game between Detective Nick O'Brien and a crew led by Ray Merrimen. While the plot focuses on the thieves' attempt to intercept untraceable money earmarked for shredding at the Federal Reserve, the true mastermind is revealed to be the crew's getaway driver, Donnie Wilson. By leveraging information gathered from bar patrons, Wilson orchestrates a double-cross, successfully shipping the stolen funds to Panama while escaping to London.

Despite being set in Los Angeles, the production was primarily filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, utilizing the Arri Alexa XT Plus camera to capture its action sequences. The film's performance defied initial projections, which estimated an opening weekend gross of $7–10 million; instead, it debuted to $15.3 million. Critics remained divided, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 42% approval rating, yet audiences were more receptive, awarding the film a B+ on CinemaScore.

The film's legacy continues with the 2025 release of its sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. The original production remains notable for its commitment to authenticity, employing Jay Dobyns—a former BATFE undercover operative—as a consultant. For lead actor Gerard Butler, the role required significant physical preparation, including gaining 25 to 30 pounds to embody the gritty, heavy-drinking detective.
