In short: Before the CGI era, a green dinosaur named Denver hatched from a prehistoric egg in Los Angeles. Befriended by local teens, he learned to skateboard, play electric guitar, and eat potato chips. While some critics dismissed the show as a cynical marketing ploy, others praised its focus on ecology and friendship.

Produced by World Events Productions and Groupe IDDH, the animated series Denver, the Last Dinosaur debuted in 1988. The premise followed a group of California teenagers—Jeremy, Mario, Shades, and Wally—who discovered a fossilized egg at the La Brea Tar Pits. Upon hatching, the dinosaur, named after a passing bus advertisement, revealed an uncanny ability to understand English and a penchant for 1980s youth culture. The show ran for two seasons, eventually concluding in 1990 as the broader dinosaur craze, fueled by films like The Land Before Time, began to fade.

The series was not without its detractors. In 2014, the website io9 included it on a list of 1980s cartoons deemed unworthy of remembrance, with writer Rob Bricken comparing the character to the infamous Poochie from The Simpsons. Conversely, reviewers like Michael P. Dougherty II found the show surprisingly entertaining, noting its commitment to themes of conservation and ecology. Despite its mixed legacy, the property maintained enough cultural footprint to inspire a CG-animated reboot, which premiered in France on August 27, 2018, and subsequently expanded to over 30 international markets.

The original production was heavily tied to the commercial landscape of the late 1980s, featuring promotional tie-ins with Knott's Berry Farm and Ralston Cereals. The show’s narrative often pitted the teens against greedy antagonists like the rock promoter Morton Fizzback, who sought to exploit Denver for fame and profit. Today, the series is owned by MarVista Entertainment, and while the original 1988 run remains a nostalgic artifact of its time, the 2018 reboot introduced the character to a new generation of viewers across North America, Europe, and Africa.
