In short: Édgar Ramírez didn't set out to be a movie star. A student of communications and a potential diplomat, he only pivoted to acting after a filmmaker noticed his potential in a short film. Today, he is a multilingual powerhouse known for portraying some of history's most complex figures.

Born in San Cristóbal, Venezuela, in 1977, Édgar Ramírez's path to stardom was unconventional. While studying mass communication at Andrés Bello Catholic University, he initially intended to pursue a career in international relations. He worked as an emerging journalist reporting on politics and served as the executive director of a Venezuelan foundation. It was only after filmmaker Guillermo Arriaga praised a short film he produced that Ramírez decided to transition from his hobby of performing into a professional acting career. His rise in the industry was marked by significant versatility. He gained early recognition in the Venezuelan soap opera Cosita rica before making his major motion-picture debut in 2005 in the film Domino. His career trajectory took him from high-budget Hollywood thrillers, such as Vantage Point and The Bourne Ultimatum, to nuanced biographical roles. For the 2010 miniseries Carlos, he acted as the infamous assassin Carlos the Jackal, securing a César Award for Most Promising Actor plus Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. Ramírez is noted for his linguistic range, speaking Spanish, English, French, Italian, and German fluently. This versatility has allowed him to inhabit diverse roles, from the boxer Roberto Durán in Hands of Stone to the fashion icon Gianni Versace in American Crime Story. Beyond the screen, he is an advocate for human rights, supporting Amnesty International's "No Dispares" campaign to reduce gun-related violence, and has worked with organizations benefiting children with special needs.
