In short: Doctor Eggman, the maniacal mastermind of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, began as a rejected mascot pitch. Designed by Naoto Ohshima, his rotund, mustachioed appearance was modeled after the 26th U.S. President. Retooled as a villain, he became a symbol of industrial machinery clashing against the natural world.

When Sega president Hayao Nakayama sought a mascot to rival Nintendo’s Mario in 1990, designers submitted various concepts. Naoto Ohshima’s proposal featured a human character wearing pajamas, inspired by Theodore Roosevelt. While the team selected Sonic as the protagonist, they found the human design too compelling to discard. Programmer Yuji Naka and the Sonic Team retooled him into the series’ primary antagonist, Doctor Eggman, intentionally crafting him as Sonic’s polar opposite.

The character’s design serves as a thematic anchor for the franchise. Eggman represents 'machinery' and 'development,' acting as a foil to Sonic’s connection to nature. This reflected a growing debate between developers and environmentalists, with Eggman embodying a human perspective that views buildings and roads as 'clean' and nature as 'dirty.' His physical traits—baldness, pince-nez sunglasses, and a large mustache—were specifically chosen to be easy for children to draw, while his personality was defined by a genius-level IQ of 300.

The character’s name has a complex history. Originally 'Doctor Eggman' in Japan, Sega of America renamed him 'Doctor Ivo Robotnik' during the 1991 localization of the first game without consulting the Japanese developers. This created a dual-identity confusion that lasted for years. By 1999’s Sonic Adventure, the series began reconciling these names, establishing 'Robotnik' as his true surname and 'Eggman' as a derisive nickname. Eventually, the character embraced the nickname to defy Sonic’s mockery, and modern games now use 'Eggman' as his official designation.

Beyond his origins, Eggman remains one of gaming’s most recognizable villains. His schemes range from roboticizing animals to constructing massive space stations like the Death Egg. Despite his obsession with world domination and his 'Eggman Empire,' he is a nuanced character who occasionally forms uneasy alliances with Sonic to combat greater threats. Whether voiced by Mike Pollock in English or portrayed by Jim Carrey in film, he remains a persistent, maniacal force in pop culture.
