The man who turned goat piss into gasoline for the soul of R&B
In short: Before he was a household name in The Blues Brothers, Donald "Duck" Dunn was the secret architect of the Stax Records sound. A self-taught master of the bass, his unique lines defined the groove of thousands of hits, influencing everything from classic soul to modern hip-hop.
Dunn's musical identity was forged in Memphis, Tennessee. Unlike many of his contemporaries who studied formal theory, Dunn was largely self-taught, learning by playing along to records and "filling in what he thought should be there." This lack of "schoolbook" constraints allowed him to develop a highly unique style. His early career began with the Royal Spades, a group that eventually evolved into the Mar-Keys, achieving a national hit with "Last Night" in 1961. By 1965, he joined Booker T. & the M.G.'s, the house band for Stax Records, where he became a cornerstone of the label's identity.
At Stax, Dunn's work was prolific and influential. He played on thousands of records, providing the foundational low-end for icons like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Albert King. His contributions to tracks such as "Respect" and "Born Under a Bad Sign" helped establish the signature Stax sound that defined R&B. Even his later work remained culturally significant; the bass lines on the 1971 album Melting Pot are noted for continuing to inspire hip-hop artists today. His versatility was immense, leading him to perform with diverse acts ranging from Elvis Presley and Eric Clapton to Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty.
Beyond the studio, Dunn became a cultural figure, appearing in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers where he famously joked about turning "goat piss into gasoline." He also served as the house band for Bob Dylan’s 30th-anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden, backing a massive lineup of legends. Throughout his career, he remained a devotee of the Fender Precision Bass, specifically favoring a 1959 model he owned until his death in 2012. His legacy is cemented by a 1992 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and a 2007 Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award.
