How a 2005 documentary became a central demand in a Ukrainian hostage crisis
In short: Earthlings is a 2005 documentary that exposes humanity's reliance on animals for food, clothing, and research. Narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, the film uses hidden camera footage to challenge speciesism. Its impact is so profound that it became the focal point of a bizarre 2020 hostage standoff in Lutsk, Ukraine.
Directed by Shaun Monson, Earthlings originated from footage captured at Los Angeles animal shelters in 1999. Monson initially intended to produce public service announcements regarding spaying and neutering, but the conditions he witnessed compelled him to expand the project into a feature-length documentary. The production process spanned six years, largely due to the immense difficulty of securing access to film inside factory farms, puppy mills, and animal experimentation laboratories.
The finished film, which features music by Moby, systematically examines how industries utilize non-human animals. By presenting this footage, the documentary draws explicit parallels between speciesism and other forms of systemic prejudice, such as racism and sexism. Upon its 2005 release, the film garnered significant recognition, winning awards at the Artivist Film Festival, the Boston International Film Festival, and the San Diego Film Festival, where Joaquin Phoenix received a Humanitarian Award for his narration.
The documentary's cultural footprint took a dark turn on July 21, 2020, during a hostage crisis in Lutsk, Ukraine. A gunman named Maksym Kryvosh seized a bus carrying 13 people and demanded that President Volodymyr Zelensky publicly recommend the film. Zelensky complied, posting a video message in Russian stating that everyone should watch Earthlings. Following this, three hostages were released, and the remaining 10 were eventually freed unharmed after police arrested the perpetrator. Monson subsequently issued a statement clarifying that the film advocates for compassion and non-violence, explicitly distancing the documentary from the act of terror.
