How a father's curious daughter inspired a hit animated science series for children
In short: Created by Jorge Cham and Daniel Whiteson, the animated series Elinor Wonders Why turns the relentless curiosity of a four-year-old into a masterclass in scientific inquiry. By following a rabbit named Elinor and her friends, the show teaches children ages 3–6 how to observe, question, and explore the natural world.
The series, which premiered on PBS Kids in September 2020, was born from a collaboration between Jorge Cham—known for his comic Piled Higher and Deeper—and Daniel Whiteson. When PBS approached Cham in 2017, he drew inspiration from his own daughter, Elinor. At age four, she was in a phase of constant questioning, where every answer prompted a new 'why.' This relentless drive to understand the world became the show's core philosophy, encouraging young viewers to use science inquiry skills rather than simply accepting facts.
Visual design was a deliberate departure from the frenetic pace often found in children's media. Cham looked to classic comics like Pogo and Calvin and Hobbes to create an aesthetic that felt natural and calming. The choice to use animal characters was strategic, allowing the creators to highlight a diverse range of physical skills and abilities while remaining relatable to children. The show is set in Animal Town, located just north of Natural Forest, California, and features a wide cast of classmates, including Ari the bat, Olive the elephant, and Koa the wombat.
Beyond the main narrative, the show integrates educational interstitials where characters like Señor Tapir sing about famous explorers and inventors. The production has also expanded into other media, including graphic novels like Hiding in Plain Sight and Forest Giants, released in 2022. Supported by a National Science Foundation grant, the series has gained an international footprint, reaching audiences in countries including Canada, Finland, and the United Arab Emirates. It remains a testament to the idea that curiosity is not just a childhood phase, but a fundamental tool for discovery.
