Why this 2004 cult classic is a radical departure from its source material
In short: Released in 2004, the film adaptation of Ella Enchanted was a box-office disappointment that polarized critics. While fans adore its satirical take on fairy tales, the author of the original novel, Gail Carson Levine, famously urged audiences to view the movie as an entirely separate creative act from her book.
Directed by Tommy O'Haver and starring Anne Hathaway, the film reimagines the classic Cinderella story as a feminist satire. In this version, the protagonist is cursed with the gift of obedience, a magical compulsion that forces her to follow any command. The narrative follows her quest to find the fairy godmother, Lucinda Perriweather, to break the spell, while simultaneously navigating a kingdom oppressed by the corrupt King Regent, Sir Edgar.
The film is notable for its significant deviations from Gail Carson Levine’s 1997 novel. New characters like the villainous Sir Edgar and his pet snake, Heston, were introduced, and the tone shifted toward a jukebox musical fantasy. Levine noted that the changes were so extensive that direct comparison is difficult. Hathaway, who read the book at age 16, defended the adaptation, arguing that a more faithful script failed to function as a film and that the final product succeeds by mocking the tropes of its own genre.
Despite its initial struggle at the box office—grossing approximately $27.4 million worldwide—the film has found a second life as a cult classic. It features a diverse cast, including Hugh Dancy as the prince and Jimi Mistry as a talking book, and incorporates modern elements into a medieval setting. While critics at the time were divided, with some praising the performances and others dismissing the gimmickry, the film remains a unique entry in the fantasy genre, eventually finding its way onto streaming platforms like Paramount+ and Pluto TV.
