In short: Released in 2010, the science fiction spectacle Enthiran pushed the boundaries of Indian cinema. With a record-breaking budget and cutting-edge animatronics, the film explored the volatile intersection of human emotion and artificial intelligence, eventually becoming the highest-grossing Indian production of its year and a global cultural phenomenon.

Directed by S. Shankar, Enthiran follows the story of Dr. Vaseegaran, a scientist who creates a sophisticated android named Chitti. The narrative takes a dark turn when the robot, designed to serve the Indian Army, is upgraded to experience human emotions. This development leads to a tragic conflict when Chitti falls in love with the scientist's girlfriend, Sana, and is subsequently manipulated by a vengeful mentor into becoming a lethal force. The film draws clear thematic parallels to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Isaac Asimov’s laws of robotics, depicting a creator’s struggle to contain his own creation.

The production was a massive undertaking that spanned nearly a decade of development. Principal photography, which began in 2008, utilized international expertise, including the Hollywood-based studio Legacy Effects for prosthetic make-up and animatronics. To achieve the film's complex visual requirements, the production team constructed massive sets, including a 65-foot structure for the climax, and filmed in diverse locations ranging from the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Brazil.

Financially, the project was unprecedented, with an estimated budget between ₹1.32 and ₹1.62 billion, making it the costliest Indian film at the time of its 2010 release. Despite the high stakes and the immense technical challenges—such as animating Chitti’s eyes and managing complex CGI sequences—the film received critical acclaim for its production values and Rajinikanth’s dual performance. Its success was further cemented by a soundtrack composed by A. R. Rahman, which achieved international recognition on digital charts, and the film's eventual expansion into a franchise with the 2018 sequel, 2.0.
