A comedic journey through Ukraine reveals the haunting, hidden history of the Holocaust
In short: In the 2005 film Everything Is Illuminated, a young American travels to Ukraine to find the woman who saved his grandfather from the Nazis. Guided by a cranky local and his eccentric grandson, the search for a vanished shtetl transforms from a culture-clash comedy into a profound exploration of buried identity.
Directed by Liev Schreiber in his debut, the film adapts Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel into a biographical comedy-drama. The story follows Jonathan, an American Jew, as he hires Heritage Tours to locate Trachimbrod, a town erased during the liquidation of Eastern European shtetls. His guides include Alexander Perchov, a cynical grandfather, and his grandson Alex, whose unique command of English and obsession with American pop culture provide the film’s comedic engine. Initially, the tour company intends only to scam the wealthy visitor, but the guides eventually commit to the mission after hearing the gravity of Jonathan’s quest.
As the trio navigates rural western Ukraine, they encounter Lista, a woman living in isolation near a vast sunflower field. She reveals the tragic fate of Augustine, the pregnant first wife of Jonathan’s grandfather, who was murdered by Nazi soldiers. This discovery serves as a catalyst for a deeper, darker revelation regarding the tour guide, Alexander Perchov. It is revealed through flashbacks that the elder Perchov was himself Jewish, having survived the Holocaust by crawling out of a mass grave and spending decades hiding his true identity to escape the trauma of his past.
The film balances these heavy historical themes with a vibrant, eclectic soundtrack featuring Gogol Bordello—whose lead singer, Eugene Hütz, portrays Alex—alongside artists like Leningrad and the Tin Hat Trio. Critics noted the film's rare ability to blend humor with the emotional weight of discovery. Roger Ebert, who awarded the film three and a half stars, suggested that a second viewing is necessary to fully grasp the nuances of the journey. Ultimately, the story concludes with a poignant act of remembrance, as both Jonathan and Alex honor their ancestors by scattering soil from the massacre site on their respective grandfathers' graves, finally providing the elder Perchov with a proper Jewish tombstone.
