A father's desperate journey to find his son amidst the chaos of war
In short: In this 1964 black-and-white drama, an elderly Georgian farmer refuses to sit idly by while his son is wounded. Instead of waiting, he enlists in the army, following the front lines into Germany to find his son in the heat of battle.
Directed by Revaz Chkheidze and based on a script by Suliko Jgenti, Father of a Soldier is a poignant World War II-themed drama. The story begins in the summer of 1942, when an elderly Georgian farmer named Giorgi Makharashvili receives news that his son, Goderdzi, has been wounded and moved to a hospital. In a desperate attempt to reach him, Giorgi begins a journey that takes him far beyond his village and into the heart of the conflict.
The narrative takes a dramatic turn when, during his journey, Giorgi discovers that his son has already recovered and has been sent back to the front lines. Rather than continuing his search as a civilian, Giorgi chooses to enlist in the motorized units. His quest eventually leads him to Germany, where he discovers that his son's tank brigade was the first to cross a specific river. The film reaches a climax during a fierce urban battle, where Soviet forces fight on the ground and second levels of a building to liberate soldiers trapped on the third floor.
The emotional weight of the film culminates in a tragic encounter. Giorgi eventually finds his son, but Goderdzi is fatally wounded and dies in his father's arms. The film concludes with a powerful image of Giorgi and his comrades crossing a bridge. This bridge bears a painted inscription honoring the bravery of the soldiers, specifically noting that the tanks of Senior Lieutenant Makharashvilli, a Hero of the Soviet Union, were the first to cross there.
