The troubled production of a war sequel that barely resembled its source material
In short: Force 10 from Navarone was a 1978 action film that struggled through casting changes, script rewrites, and a budget that ballooned past 10 million dollars. Despite featuring a star-studded cast including Harrison Ford and Robert Shaw, the film faced mixed reviews and ultimately failed to replicate the original's financial success.
The journey to bring Force 10 from Navarone to the screen spanned nearly two decades. Following the 1961 success of The Guns of Navarone, producer Carl Foreman spent years attempting to reunite the original cast, including Gregory Peck and David Niven. However, by the late 1970s, the actors were considered too old for the roles. The film was eventually produced with a new cast, including Robert Shaw and Harrison Ford, though the production was plagued by creative friction. Harrison Ford, fresh off Star Wars, later admitted he felt lost during filming, noting that his character lacked a clear purpose in the story.
The film’s connection to Alistair MacLean’s 1968 novel was tenuous at best. MacLean himself noted that the screenplay bore little resemblance to his book, and he was reportedly unhappy with the prominence given to the character played by Barbara Bach. The production process was equally chaotic; five different writers worked on the script, and the film went over its original 8.3 million dollar budget, requiring a completion guarantor to step in. Filming took place across diverse locations, including Yugoslavia, where President Tito authorized the use of 2,000 soldiers as extras and provided authentic military equipment.
Upon its 1978 release, the film received mixed reviews and performed poorly at the box office, earning less than a third of its budget. Robert Shaw, who died of a heart attack before the film reached theaters, had expressed deep dissatisfaction with the project during production. Decades later, the film’s legacy was tied to legal battles rather than cinematic acclaim. In 2008, a New York Supreme Court trial awarded the producers funds withheld by Columbia Pictures, a verdict that was upheld on appeal in 2009. Despite its troubled history, the film remains a curious footnote in the career of Harrison Ford and the broader history of war cinema.
