How a near-drowning incident inspired the world's most exported adventure game show
In short: In 1980, a French television presenter nearly drowned while attempting to reach a remote maritime fortress. This harrowing experience sparked the creation of Fort Boyard, a global phenomenon where contestants tackle physical challenges in a mysterious tower. Over thirty years later, the show remains a cornerstone of international television.
The concept for Fort Boyard originated in 1986, when producer Jacques Antoine sought a successor to his previous hit, La Chasse aux Trésors. Inspired by the 1980 rescue of presenter Philippe de Dieuleveult, Antoine envisioned a team-based game show set within a mysterious, character-populated fortress. The production team identified the actual Fort Boyard—a fortification located in the Pertuis d'Antioche strait—as the perfect set. After being purchased by the department of Charente-Maritime for a symbolic franc, the site underwent extensive restoration starting in 1989 to accommodate filming, including the installation of a self-elevating platform and a metal gangway.
The show’s format, which emphasizes physical and endurance challenges, was first broadcast in France on 7 July 1990. Its success led to 34 foreign versions, making it the most-exported French TV format. While the show initially featured celebrities playing for charity, the formula has evolved over the decades, occasionally incorporating members of the public or even anonymous candidates. The fortress has also hosted unique events, including private team-building sessions for a Russian billionaire and special episodes for children.
The production has faced numerous logistical and global challenges. In 1989, the unavailability of the fort during renovations led to the creation of a London-based pilot and the development of a separate, distinct format called The Crystal Maze. More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the suspension of foreign filming in 2020, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine led to the cancellation of the Russian version in 2022. Despite these hurdles, the format continues to attract interest, with new digital experiments like Twitch live streams keeping the legendary fortress relevant for modern audiences.
