Why did a blockbuster reboot with a massive budget become a box-office bomb?
In short: Paul Feig’s 2016 Ghostbusters reboot arrived with high expectations and a star-studded cast, yet it struggled to find its footing. Despite earning $229 million globally, the production’s $144 million price tag and additional costs resulted in a $70 million loss, forcing the studio to abandon plans for a direct sequel.
The journey to the 2016 film was fraught with decades of development hurdles. Following the 1989 release of Ghostbusters II, the franchise remained in limbo, largely due to Bill Murray’s reluctance to return. Murray, who felt the second film lacked quality, held significant contractual power alongside his co-stars and director Ivan Reitman, effectively allowing any of them to veto new projects. Various scripts, including one titled Ghostbusters 3: Hellbent, were discarded over the years as the studio struggled to reconcile the original cast's demands with the desire for a modern revival.
When Sony Pictures eventually pivoted to a reboot, they tapped Paul Feig to helm a version featuring an all-female lead quartet. This decision ignited a firestorm of controversy long before the film’s July 2016 release. The trailer became one of the most disliked videos on YouTube, with critics citing everything from a perceived lack of humor to deep-seated misogyny and fan entitlement. While some viewers were simply protective of the original canon, others engaged in coordinated campaigns to disparage the film, leading to a polarized public response that overshadowed the actual production.
Behind the scenes, the film was a technical feat, utilizing 1,700 visual effects shots across six different studios. The production team, including set dressers who consulted with MIT physicists, attempted to blend modern CGI with practical effects to honor the spirit of the original films. Despite these efforts and the inclusion of cameos from original cast members like Dan Aykroyd and Sigourney Weaver, the film failed to achieve the financial success required for a franchise continuation. Ultimately, Sony shifted its strategy, choosing to return to the original film’s timeline with the 2021 release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
